Whether your new windows or doors are made from aluminium or uPVC, they will give you many years’ trouble free, low maintenance service. However, a few simple items of regular maintenance will prolong the life of many of the components and will avoid invalidation of the guarantee.
Cleaning by area
GLASS
Heavy external grime should be removed with a solution of soap and water.
Any proprietary household glass cleaner may be used with a soft cloth.
Take care when cleaning leaded lights as excessive pressure can dislodge the lead/astragal bar from the glass surface.
uPVC or ALUMINIUM FRAMES
Wash the frames with a soap and water solution at least every six months.
If required clean with a non-abrasive proprietary cleaner, suitable for use on plastics.
Where accessible clear drainage holes which can be seen when you open the windows and doors.
CONSERVATORY & PORCH ROOFS
Roofing panels must be cleaned in a similar manner to PVCu frames.
Clear gutters of leaves and debris to avoid overflow of rainwater and ensure unblocked drainage.
NOTE: Do not walk on conservatory roofs.
Causes & Cures: By Room
LIVING ROOM MAINTENANCE
Allow the rooms warmth to reach the window by positioning the curtains approximately 150mm from the glass.
Where possible avoid glazed or non-absorbent wall coatings.
Where flues have been blocked off wall vents are most helpful.
Vent holes below gas fires help to facilitate ventilation.
Open windows for short periods each day to allow air changes.
BEDROOM MAINTENANCE
Extend the central heating programme or other heating system accordingly.
Open windows for short periods each day to allow air changes.
BATHROOM MAINTENANCE
Stop moisture finding its way into the rest of the house by keeping the door closed during and after bathing.
Open windows for short periods each day to allow air changes.
KITCHEN MAINTENANCE
Close doorways into the remainder of the house and keep a window open during cooking.
Extractor fans etc. can help ventilate your room.
NEW BUILD MAINTENANCE
Bricks, timber, concrete etc. have all absorbed water during the construction and much of this will dissipate into the living atmosphere, therefore allow time for it to dry out.
